Author Visits

by George Pilling, District Library Media Manager

Author visits are fun and inspirational for students.  Most Visalia elementary schools are having at least one visit this year.  The more students are prepared, the more they will get out of the visit.

Forty-three authors have been here sponsored by Visalia Unified since the 2001-2 school year. Click here for past visits!

The following web sites have much information about hosting an author visit:

bullet http://childrensbooks.about.com/library/howto/htscheduleauthor.htm A good introduction to the whole process.
bullethttp://www.tonibuzzeo.com/visits.html - Pay special attention to the "Terrific Visits Tip Sheet."

Having a visit to a Visalia Unified School

  1. George Pilling and his staff at the VLC select the authors for the next school year and give a list to principals and librarians in May.
  2. Each school selects an author and the date from the list.
  3. Confirmation comes from the VLC
    1. The VLC pays for author's housing and meals. School only pays author's per diem fee.
    2. We encourage whole day author visits to your school. This allows a school to really get involved in the visit and the students to learn from it. See sample visit schedules below.
  4. School selects a Coordinator and a Cheerleader for the visit.
    1. Click here for Coordinator and Cheerleader duties
  5. Book sales are handled by the VLC. Your price list will be available two weeks before the visit.
