What: The logo to the right was developed to convey the vision of technology's role in the click for the Visalia Learning CenterVisalia Unified School District. At the center is the child or student. Behind him/her is the parent or teacher. The relationship of these two images is a vital component to our view of technology. In our vision, technology serves as the conduit to establish and strengthen relationships; specifically the parent-child relationship and the student-teacher relationship.

Surrounding this relationship is an open paperback book. This book represent a thirst, a curiosity for learning. It also symbolizes the necessity of useful information. Another relationship is represented in our vision: the lifelong learner to valid information. In our vision, information literacy gets equal value next to reading, writing, arithmetic, and communication.

Note that the book binding is shaped with the trademark "blue V" that identifies the Visalia Unified School District.

The circling electron symbolizes the digital channel these relationships are supported. Technology is the tool that supports great teaching, high student achievement, and effective management.

Our motto, "Learning in the 21st Century" proclaims our forward looking vision.

So What: My vision for technology's best role in a successful school system has been incubating for many years. It is born out of personal classroom experience, piles of books and articles by noted experts in the field, countless hours networking with interested colleagues, and trial and error. I have got it wrong many more times than I have got it right. In fact I may not have it right now.

I chose this article because it embodies my thinking about technology's role in a successful educational organization. The elements came together nicely on evening while I was reflecting on this role. The logo is now the official logo of the Visalia Learning Center. In CPSEL 1, a clear vision is the beginning of all that follows.

As an aside, I had this logo printed on a number of mugs and put together a PowerPoint show that revealed its symbolism. I was given the opportunity to present it to the cabinet for review. The logo and mugs were a smash! I even had one mug made with the logo on the right side of the handle for a left handed cabinet member. It was also well received by the board of education and my curriculum division colleagues.

What's Next: Aside from t-shirts, mugs, and name tags, this image will keep our vision moving forward. The experience helped to confirm in me my own personal view of the subject as well as my artistic talent and flare for the dramatic. How will the logo change as our vision changes? How will I be able to keep this vision on track and moving forward?
